SIL Global is a non-profit NGO providing expertise in language, education, technology and translation for all language communities in Southeast Asia. We are seeking a Senior Accountant to provide support to the Operations Assistant Director and Associate Director for Finance for SIL in Thailand, as well as regional activity in neighboring countries.

Candidates should have advanced accounting training and certification including a university degree in Accounting and relevant training for certification, plus a minimum of 8 years work experience as an accountant for a medium or larger business. Experience with international financial best practices is required. NGO/Non-profit specific training experience is a plus, but not required. Candidates need to be self motivated to identify areas of financial training and knowledge development, and work with a supervisor to develop these skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and online file management systems is expected, and familiarity with Thunderbird/Outlook and Oracle NetSuite is preferred.

Candidates should have a high level of English proficiency, both written and spoken, as this role is primarily conducted in English, both in communication with staff (primarily email interaction) and the software platform used (software user experience not available in Thai).

Senior Accountant Job description

Summary of Role

The Senior Account provides support to the Operations Assistant Director and Associate Director for Finance as a Senior Accountant for SIL in Thailand, as well as regional activity in neighboring countries.

They work closely with the Finance Team to perform accounting duties to ensure accurate reporting across all projects, compliance with Thai law, and alignment with donor regulations and organizational policies. The Senior Accountant must be able to conduct all activities related to the financial operations such that the Associate Director for Finance is not required to intervene in any routine operations.

Required Skills and Capabilities

  • Highly proficient English, written and spoken. This role is primarily conducted in English, both in communication with staff (primarily email interaction) and the software platform used (software user experience not available in Thai).

  • SIL Global is a US based international company so we must be compliant with US IRS requirements, therefore maintaining compliance with international non-profit requirements is an essential part of this role; candidates who do not have this specific experience must be self-driven to learn and operate in compliance with these requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, and online file management systems required; Thunderbird/Outlook and Oracle NetSuite preferred.

Major Job Responsibilities

  • Assemble journals and other data for review and import to the central accounting system.
  • Reconcile accounts and correct errors.
  • Generate & distribute Management, Member & Project Reports.
  • Review reports and accounts for outstanding balances, missing reports and other issues of concern to the Group and/or directorate.
  • Establishes monthly book rates of exchange in consultation with cashiers.
  • Collaborate with Associate Director for Finance to jointly perform technical supervision and direction of the activities of the Accounting and Cashier services of the Group, notably the Assistant Accountant, Cashiers and Online Banking in Chiang Mai, and Cashiers in other regions.
  • Work with project teams to prepare budgets, assist with creation of project proposals, and check/confirm that budgets are correctly recorded.
  • Coordinate administrative budgets with leadership, assist domain coordinators with tracking expenses and reporting.
  • Assist Assistant Accountant with checking documentation and coordinating with teams that are not able to communicate in the Thai language.
  • Maintain report templates and prepare financial reports as requested by SIL Global policies, US GAAP, Thai Labor Department and local project teams.
  • Assist with global internal controls review (part of SIL’s global audit) and with Thai audit, especially in coordination between global policies.
